I can't help but laugh my shadenfreude-filled laugh on the announcement (via Slashdot) that Sony is delaying the release of the PS3 until November. The commentary with the Slashdot piece basically makes all the points you need to know: This is great news for Microsoft, good news for Nintendo, and a huge blow against Sony. It's now likely that the US release of the PS3 won't come until 2007, meaning that by the time the PS3 makes it out, the Xbox 360 will already have been out for a year, and have a much larger stable of games available.
Haw haw!
(Just a small note - I don't own any game station more advanced than a Super Nintendo. My partisanship is fully explained by the fact that Sony makes crap gear and hates its customers. As opposed to Microsoft... never mind.)

Slashdot has the story wrong, and their commentary is thus worthless -- Sony announced that it would be a worldwide launch in November. Still, it's going to be an uphill battle in North America. Next-Gen.biz has a much better analysis of the situation: announcement, detailed analysis
Sony should have announced this sooner, although apparently publishers have known for a while and anyone who follows the game industry has reasonably assumed the delay would happen.
The biggest cited reason for the delay? It's taking too long to resolve the final (i.e., anti-consumer copy protection) details for Blu-ray.
The news isn't necessarily that good for Nintendo, but I wouldn't say it's bad, either; Nintendo is likely going to launch the Revolution in the fall as well but they're going for a different market segment with a different approach. The Revolution is not intended to directly compete with Microsoft or Sony, because it's stupid to even try.
I wouldn't say Slashdot's commentary is worthless - they acknowledge that Sony "claims" their release will be worldwide, but they also note that this would be out of character for every previous release Sony has made.
The other reason for the delay (aside from blu-ray) is the questionable goal of trying to bring down the price of the Cell processor. I don't know if Sony can get there, without selling the PS3 at a loss.
Sony must have done some pretty terrible things to you. There's nothing that make me happy when when Microsoft gains market share of anything. Microsoft is the only operating system that is in league with Satan! (Well, actually FreeBSD is also in league with Satan, but they are at least open about it.
Yeah, saying "worthless" is a bit harsh, but I was annoyed that most of the /. analysis is premised on it not launching in NA until 2007, skipping over the "worldwide" bit, which seems the most newsworthy part of the announcement.
And, yes, of course the costs of Cell are likely a large factor in the delay, but the official announcements, afaik, only cite finalizing Blu-ray as the cause.
