It's the REM song as we know it...

Two pieces of good news! One, CO2 emissions are rising faster than expected, and two, the ocean is absorbing them at lower rates as it saturates with the damn stuff. Oh, and I guess three: the wildfires in California are the kind of thing we can expect more of in the future.

I honestly don't know what I'm supposed to say these days. I really feel like I'm on the edge here, and we're all waiting to be pushed off.

I feel much the same way.

Thank you for the "Upside of Down" recommendation. THD was brilliant in the way he delineated the potential for negative synergies between the five stresses he identifies. The remedies/responses he proposed were rather less convincing but better than a counsel of despair, I suppose.

So what to do? Of course, one must make lifestyle adjustments to reduce personal carbon impact but it is hard to escape the feeling that it is little more than well-meaning tokenism; rearranging the the deckchairs, etc.

To take my leave on a humourous note, when knocking this modest post together I Googled "counsel of despair" to confirm the correct usage. And what should item #3 of the results be?

CLIMATE PORN IS A COUNSEL OF DESPAIR

Oh dear.

It's sort of tragic that California has to bear the brunt of Mother Nature's fury, since I consider it to be more environmentally aware than most of the other states. Then again, Mother Nature doesn't really play favorites.
