30-second Analysis

So, according to The Oil Drum, we on planet Earth discovered enough oil and natural gas in all of 2005 to power the planet for 53 days and three months, respectively.

Obviously, if we were looking for a happy number, we would have discovered more than a year's worth of oil or NG - that is, we would have at least kept the supply level. No luck. We're using oil faster and faster. We're using oil 6 times faster than we're discovering it, and NG 4 times. Not a great ratio, all things considered.
