Gee, do you think the opposition can use Google?

Dalton McGuinty, 2007: No new taxes!

Dalton McGuinty, 2009: Suckers.

Two elections, two promises not to raise taxes, two smoking craters in the field where the Liberals kept their credibility.

I don't get it. How is merging the PST and GST together a tax hike?

If there are differences between the application of the taxes, he's saying he'll adjust for it with rebates.

I'm not sure I get your point.

The reports I'm reading say the rebates are temporary, and will probably only last the first year. The tax hike will stay forever.

But we'll see this afternoon.

I've yet to see a decent explanation of what this tax hike means (CBC had a very fancy graphic on the news last night, unfortunately they only used it to draw arrows going up and down)
So, where before we have 7% GST and 8% PST, we now have 15% tax... I guess the problem is that purchases exempt from the PST will no longer be so?

Also, do I qualify as working poor? Free money plz

Please don't join the chorus of ignorance that is confused on this point. The changes are likely to result in reduced government revenue, which last time I checked, was a tax cut, not an increase.

At any rate, the idea that we shouldn't pursue obvious efficiency gains because somebody, somewhere in the province might end up out a few dollars is a recipe for American-style stagnation and decline.

There are better ways to ensure a progressive system of taxation than by maintaining an inefficient system of taxation.

Oh, and apparently I'm not the only person living in my house who didn't realize the GST was reduced to 5% until this week.

Greg: The tax harmonization is going to cost the average family $900/yr, and the $1000 rebates only last a year. (This has been confirmed since 9:20) Starting in 2013, families in Ontario are going to be poorer, and it's going to be more than "a few dollars".

For the record, my problem with McGuinty is that he keeps making stupid promises, not that he keeps breaking stupid promises.
