When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.There's actually a long argument to be made that, in fact, the country Sowell yearns for so intently was only ever created by military coups, or a commensurate application of violence in the service of conservative ideology. (See Spain, Greece, or most of the Americas south of the Rio Grande throughout the 20th century.) Except it's late and the point is this: you have an American Republican [haw!] publicly speculating on the beneficial aspects of a military coup. That would be the kind of thing that George Washington publicly humiliated himself to avoid, by the way.
On my sunnier days, I actually think America will manage to muddle through the next century, more or less. The question isn't can America be saved -- it's can American rightists be saved from their nuttiest brethren?

Well, maybe the Americans will manage their way and maybe they will not.It seems to be a watch and wait thing for Canadians, and the Americans do have a fearful talent for forming up in big mobs and killing one another in large numbers. It was a level headed and very well informed guy, Brzezinski, who recently stated there was a prospect of a fake act of terrorism as a sort of Reichstag fire device. There is no sign at all that the obscenely wealthy upper crust in the States has departed from general support for US imperialism in Asia,no sign at all.
