Gays and Lesbians are, apparently, more and more welcome in the ranks of the US armed services. And if you don't believe that this has anything to do with critical manpower shortages because of Iraq, I've got a bridge for you...
This actually mirrors the effects of the Korean War on racial segregation in the armed forces. While Truman ordered the desegregation in 1948, it was only when all-white frontline units took heavy casualties in the opening months of Korea that blacks began to be integrated in to combat units.
So now they can enjoy their right to go die overseas in illegal wars of empire, just like any other outcast American group! (/snark.)
