ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they are prepared to send the army into northern Iraq if U.S. and Iraqi forces do not take steps to combat Turkish Kurdish guerrillas there - a move that could put Turkey on a collision course with the United States. Can we go one full day without the world getting worse? Just one?
Turkey is facing increasing domestic pressure to act after 15 soldiers, police and guards were killed fighting the guerrillas in southeastern Turkey in the past week.
"The government is really in a bind," said Seyfi Tashan, director of the Foreign Policy Institute at Bilkent University in Ankara. "On the one hand, they don't want things to break down with the United States. On the other hand, the public is crying for action."
Of course, if you accept that Israel is on solid ground in invading Lebanon and rocketing the Lebanese capital, then by the same logic Turkey should be bombing Baghdad right now - though who'd notice, I'm not sure. And if Israel attacks Syria - as the right is advocating - then you have to concede that Turkey should attack America: America's ties to Kurdistan are far, far more pronounced than the ties between Syria and Hezbollah.
That sure was a great precedent you guys set. Way to go.

Yeah, probably the bad news story of the day which almost nobody picked up.
Also predicted back in 2002-03, and dismissed as "defeatist talk".
Damn! I hate it when you write the same post I do, but better.
