The Clenched Fist and The Dagger-Thrust

I haven't seen anyone else say it yet, so I'll just point out something - Jeff Goldstein's ranting that the war is going badly because of the people who were right about the war going badly can only be called a fascist ideology.

To believe what Goldstein believes - that dissent has a material effect on the outcome of the war on the battlefield - you need to believe that there is not just a moral virtue to unity (itself a dangerous idea) but an actual physical, mortal threat posed by disunity.

Goldstein tries to waffle a bit on this point (mainly so he doesn't have to march fellow Conservatives to the firing line) but the conclusion is inescapable. Once you've bought in to this dangerous, idiotic idea, the next step comes naturally. If dissent poses a threat to national security - by undermining the military effectiveness of the United States - then dissent needs to be suppressed, just as we suppress all activities which we see as threats (like murder, drug dealing, arson, etc.)

Jeff Goldstein is espousing fascist ideology. It's that simple. Barring a retraction and an apology, his opponents have no obligation to treat him seriously. Anyone of good conscience should shun him.
