Has anyone noticed that the coverup worked? The GOP: Incapable of winning fairly, ever.
In his impressive presentation of the indictment of Lewis "Scooter" Libby last week, Patrick Fitzgerald expressed the wish that witnesses had testified when subpoenas were issued in August 2004, and "we would have been here in October 2004 instead of October 2005."
Note the significance of the two dates: October 2004, before President Bush was reelected, and October 2005, after the president was reelected. Those dates make clear why Libby threw sand in the eyes of prosecutors, in the special counsel's apt metaphor, and helped drag out the investigation.
Oh, and we should mention that the press was complicit - again - in Bush's second term. This time it was far more insidious than Bush's 2000 treatment - where the press basically hated Gore irrationally, and did their level best not to allow any substantial criticism of then Guverner Shrub.
Paul Krugman is the only notable exception to this. Even then, his criticism was more along the "Bush is lying about his tax plan" line, and less "he's a drunken illiterate who barely mangages not to drool on himself."
This time, members of the press refused to testify before a grand jury, delaying (with others) the administration of justice. Well done, fourth estate. Well done.
