You would wonder this because nowhere in the article does it mention that she is required to leave the Imperial family by law. Only members of the line of succession are allowed in the Imperial Household. This is largely because the American occupation forces in 1945 were willing to tolerate retaining the Emperor, but no other vestige of the aristocracy was kept.
This wouldn't be too hard to add to the article. An example:
Princess Sayako is required to leave the Imperial household by a law passed in 1947.A bit clunky perhaps, but short and too the point. And it would have been useful information, unlike some of the other lines in this article. For example:
""After all, it is not even clear if she would be able to catch a train. Imagine coping with a packed Tokyo rush hour if you are not used to it," she added."I realize it's just a wire piece, but would it really be too hard to actually inform readers?
