One thing that makes me eat my own teeth is hearing people say we shouldn't "politicize" the tragedy of New Orleans. Whether its from Republicans trying to save Bush from the judgment of history (Nero calling on line one!) or from centrists wanting to look mature, this is absolute madness. This is a political event, one way or the other.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but THIS IS WHY POLITICS MATTERS. It matters who's in charge. At the end of the day, the deficit isn't going to erase an American city like a vengeful God - but Katrina did. What matters is who do you trust to pick up the pieces.
I won't be the first to point out that the response that isn't happening in New Orleans is exactly the response that wouldn't happen in response to a nuclear or biological attack on a major American city. The one thing - the only fucking thing! - that Bush was supposed to have over Kerry, and he's fucked it up beyond comprehension.
All you Democrats who would've voted Kerry, but thought Bush would handle terrorism better? All you security moms and dads who couldn't figure out the difference between confidence and competence? You have blood on your hands tonight. People have died, and will continue to die unnecessarily because this band of fucking morons couldn't figure out that the poor couldn't get out of the path of destruction.
I loathe and detest George W. Bush more than ever tonight.
And, for you Democrats who want to rally behind the President tonight - think for one goddamn second: Were the roles reversed, could you expect the Republicans to get behind you - for something other than a gang-knifing, Caesar-style? No - the Republicans would be screaming about how woefully underprepared America has become under the Democrats.
And you know what? If a Democrat had done this, they'd be right to do it. So serve the Republic and your constituents for once in your sorry careers. Lay the blame where it rightly lies - at the feet of the President, who has failed in the most basic task of his office - to protect Americans.
