OTTAWA (CP) - MP Pat O'Brien, who opposes the government's position on gay marriage, has quit the Liberals to sit as an Independent. So this Liberal-in-name-only now isn't even that. So now we face the prospect of the government losing a vote on gay marriage, unless Duceppe decides to back the Liberals on this. Interesting. Does Duceppe betray the socially-progressive side of the BQ in favour of defeating the government? Or does he do the right thing for Canada, and Quebec? For most other people, this wouldn't be a tough choice. For Conservatives and separatists, however...
The move weakens the minority government and raises fresh questions about whether it can survive another confidence vote and pass its same-sex marriage legislation.
God, how many independents does this make now? 4?
