Just A Book, Remember?

Christ. Not five minutes after writing my last post, I read this at Political Animal. The short version is that Texas boldly passed a law hugely restricting the availabilty of abortions, especially after 4 months. The law has had a predictable effect - young women seeking unorthodox solutions, including one young woman who had her boyfriend step on her stomach to induce a miscarriage.

Unsurprisingly (this is America, after all) it gets worse. Texas also boldly introduced a "fetal murder" law which makes it punishable by death to cause the death of a fetus, including inducing a miscarriage. So we have the entirely logical outcome of electing convervatives - a theocratically driven justice system which has just sentenced that young woman's 19-year old boyfriend to 40 years in prison - and that only because the prosecutor opted against the death penalty. The prosecutor also said he would have gone after the girl if the law had allowed him.

Kevin has a postscript I can't best: "It's like living under the Ayatollahs in Iran. It's simple barbarism." Ah, Kevin, don't you remember - when their lawmakers justify oppression using religion, it's just a book. When we do it, it's A Culture of LifeTM.

So my question for Canadian conservatives: In your fight against gay marriage, these are the dogs you're lying down with. Do you honestly believe you can walk away without bringing back fleas?
