What Will We Tell The Children?

...after they come out of their bedrooms?

Okay, so the media has engaged in another round of hysterical clucking over the results of a recent survey, in which it is revealed... GASP! Teens are enjoying an enjoyable activity with each other (and presumably, in much larger numbers by themselves.)

Yes, kids are having The Sex. What's next? Do we yell about abstinence? Marriage? What relevance does marriage have today anyway, with or without sex? I don't know, it's hard for me to get exercised about this. All I can say is that kids are basically impossible to monitor when they put their minds to it - hell, I was pretty tame for a teenage boy, and I got away with a lot. The only option for parents is harm reduction, for all sorts of activities - drugs, sex, school, you name it.

y'know,
"12 per cent of boys and 13 per cent of girls -- reported having sex by the time they reached 14 or 15."

is just about the least shocking thing somebody could have said to me... ten percent? That means that 90% are having sex after the age of 15, which seems utterly normal ([oldgeezermode]and in-line with what was happening while we were "that age" [/oldgeezermode]).

What's shocking to me is all of the abstinence-first/abstinence-only "sex-ed" programs - that anyone thinks they work.
