Juan Cole has some news on the continuing trials of the Iraqi parliament. Which still, by the way, does not have a PM or cabinet, due to a requirement (inserted, last-minute, by the Americans) that a government garner 2/3 of the confidence of Parliament. This means that, despite the fact that the Shia, pro-Iranian United Iraqi Alliance has 53% of the seats in Parliament, they haven't been able to form the government.
So two questions: One, was this a deliberate ploy to disenfranchise the shia - that is, 2/3 of the Iraqi people?
and Two, did the Americans not consider that this would cause gridlock in the political process?
Shockingly, elections have not seemed to call in the magical freedom fairies to solve all our problems. Awwww.
