Exhibit A) Cartoon Laws of Thermodynamics, courtesy of Roger Ebert.
Exhibit B) Why the British never used torture during World War II. "For one thing it is the act of a coward. For another, it is unintelligent, for the spy will give an answer to please, an answer to escape punishment." Notice the priority of those reasons. Also, notice that Britain was literally on the edge of national destruction during most of 1940-41, and didn't resort to any kind of Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib. They had far more reason to resort to torture than we do today, and didn't.
Maher Arar's fate should make us all deeply ashamed of our "allies". Hell, I'm almost ashamed of our geography.
