So, I missed the news coverage of it, but apparently the leader of Her Majesty's Opposition said today:
"Let us not forget, it is the Liberal Party that said 'none is too many,' when it came to Jews fleeing from Hitler," Mr. Harper said yesterday. "It is the Liberal Party that interned Japanese Canadians in camps on Canada's West Coast, an act which [former prime minister] Pierre Trudeau refused to apologize or make restitution for."Wow. I mean. Wow. Where to begin? What, pray tell, was the Conservative opinion in Alberta on Jewish refugees in 1940, Mr. Harper? There were Swastikas flying in Toronto (cough Christie Pits Riots cough) so let's not pretend that it was Liberal prejudice. This was a terribly Canadian act of callousness. Furthermore, Pierre Trudeau would have refused to apologize for almost anything. He wasn't, shall we say, a humble man.
More broadly, what the hell is Harper talking about? He's quoted later as saying "The Liberal Party of Canada is simply in no position -- either past or present -- to lecture anyone about Charter rights or human rights," and goes on to invoke Trudeau's use of the War Measures Act. So let's all be clear: The Liberal Party should be held responsible for an act neither the current PM nor anyone in his Cabinet had anything to do with, which occurred thirty years ago. More than that, because of events that occurred sixty years ago, before the vast majority of the Canadian population was even born, we can't let gays marry today.
Or something. The guy really is out to lunch. Someone else want to try and decipher it?
