The US has recalled their ambassador from Syria in the aftermath of the assasination of the former PM.

Boy, it's almost a good thing these guys can't figure out who they want to fight next. If they were sure, they'd probably have done it by now. The other good news is that the EU is sane. Javier Solana is saying that there is no need to change Syrian-EU relations.
There's been a lot of talk in the last few years of US "soft power", or the influence the US gains from being a symbol of emulation in the world - through it's political, economic and cultural predominance. One of the more interesting elements of the Rise of Europe is how the EU has been siphoning away some of the US's soft power. Who do you think is going to be seen as the more rational actor in this case? The war-crazy US or the sane and deliberative EU?
