Apparently the Kurdish referendum on independence is more than 80% for declaring an independent state of Kurdistan. Not unexpected, but it's bad news all the same.
The Americans now have two choices - stomp out the one genuinely democratic part of Iraq (the self-governing Kurds) or let one of Iraq's major oil provinces move for independence, at which point civil war isn't just possible, it's almost necessary. Then Turkey gets involved (they're not big on the Kurds) and the game gets really fun. Does Iran join in, too? Who can say?
Not that any of this is a foregone conclusion, just that I'd like to see some good news someday soon.
